Real legends know that World Book Day (5 March, FYI) is a yearly highlight.
Remember those heady days when you’d be presented with your £1 book token, rush off to the Scholastic Book Fair, and take your pick from a special collection made just for the occasion?
True joy.
Now, young ‘uns are even more blessed, as World Book Day is teaming up with McDonald’s – so they get the joy of reading and some fries.
World Book Day has announced its first partnership with McDonald’s. From 5 February until Tuesday 17 March, every Happy Meal served in the UK and Ireland will be handed over with a £1 World Book Day token, with the intention to get every child and young person a free or discounted book to enjoy.
With each Happy Meal ordered, children and families can swap their voucher for one of the free World Book Day collection, including books by Anthony Horowitz, Onjali Q. RaĂşf, Matt Haig, Greg James & Chris Smith and Beth Reekles, or get £1 off a book or audiobook costing £2.99 or more, at their local participating bookshop or supermarket between 27 February and 29 March.
It’s a pretty magical collaboration, really. Picture yourself on a rainy afternoon, enjoying some chicken nuggets before settling in with a great read. Sounds blissful.
This year's World Book Day £1 reads:
Bing’s Splashy Story, published by Harper Collins
Supertato: Books are Rubbish, by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet
Amelia Fang and the Bookworm Gang, by Laura Ellen Anderson
Dogman by Dav Pilkey
Evie in the Jungle by Matt Haig
The Day We Met the Queen by Onjali Q. Rauf
Kid Normal and the Loudest Library, by Chris Smith and Greg James
The Case of the Drowned Pearl, by Robin Stevens
Alex Rider Undercover: The Classified Files by Anthony Horowitz
My Awesome Guide to Getting Good at Stuff by Matthew Syed
Split by Muhammad Khan
The Kissing Booth: Road Trip! by Beth Reekles
Gareth Helm, SVP, Chief Marketing Officer of McDonald’s, said: ‘We are incredibly proud of our Happy Readers scheme, with over 90 million books given away to families across the UK and Ireland since 2013.
‘Our partnership with World Book Day is yet another way in which we are making it easier for families to enjoy reading together.
‘We hope the distribution of World Book Day tokens on our Happy Meal boxes will encourage even more families to Share a Story and celebrate the magic of reading together.’
So that’s all great news for kids. For adults suddenly hit with nostalgia for World Book Day, don’t worry – you can do your own cosy reading day whenever you want. That’s the benefit of being a grownup. Go to your local bookshop, buy as many books as you want, then order a takeout. Dreamy.
