Inflatable latex trousers are here and people think they look like ‘ball sacks’

Art is in the eye of the beholder and all that but apparently we Brits aren’t the most artistic.

After London College of Fashion designer Harikrishnan unveiled his inflatable latex trousers that come in a variety of colours, people couldn’t help but make fun of the high fashion number.

The quirky graduate collection featured billowing latex trousers which are tapered at the ankle.

But folks in their droves took to Twitter to say it looked more like ‘swollen testicles’.

Tough crowd. Clearly the essence of the piece was lost on the audience.

Harikrishnan put a lot of work into the items. The super-wide inflatable trousers were made up of 30 individual latex panels, which came in white or colour blocks of reds and greens.

The designer achieved the look by pumping the trousers with air via a seven millimetre-wide inflation valve at the bottom.

‘I got the idea when I was playing with my dog and I started thinking about how exaggerated objects must look from such a low angle,’ the designer explained to fashion magazine Dezeen.

‘The thought of him seeing me as a giant figure or not seeing my head at all was intriguing, so I decided to reimagine the people around me through the game of distortion – detached from the stereotypical, pre-determined notions of the human perspective.’

To bring the pieces together, Harikrishnan lived in an artsy Indian community in Channapatna for a month, picking up tips from woodturning and lacquer work (wood finishing) craftsmen.

But people couldn’t help but compare the trousers to the likes of MC Hammer and Aladdin.

Some commented saying ‘testicles, but make it fashion,’ while others called them ‘ ball bottoms’.

Harikrishnan isn’t fussed by all that though.

He added: ‘I want to create visual imagery that’s as far away as possible from neutrality, to make people question the relevance of the proportions we see every day.’

‘Especially in fashion, I see the same images and similar proportions everywhere,’ he explained.

The work was displayed alongside 19 other artists as part of the London College of Fashion’s MA20 catwalk show.
