Ovie Soko might have been responsible for the resurgence of the bucket hat to mainstream fashion, but it appears there’s another trendsetter, this time bringing the visored bucket hat to our collective consciousness: Coronavirus.
COVID-19 has had far-reaching effects when it comes to healthcare and travel, but few people thought it’d have such a big impact in the fashion world.
Along with makeup specifically tested to wear with face masks and masks with face prints on to unlock your phone while wearing them, one big change has been an uptick in popularity of unique items like these bucket hats.
Sellers have been popping up across Instagram and resale websites, with the pictures looking decidedly gridworthy.
Although it’s been confirmed by the NHS that masks and face protections offer little by way of disease prevention, their use has exploded to the point of shortages of surgical masks online.
Now, however, the fashion conscious and health conscious can wear their Boomtoom-approved bucket hats while keeping their mouths away from sneezes and coughs on the tube.
Costing roughly £20, the hat is made from 50% cotton and 50% urethane material, and is touted by websites as ‘safe from viruses’.
Some sellers are offering children’s sizes as well as those for adults, but so far it appears to be the streetwear crowd who’ve got their hands on them.
Guidelines in the UK currently have no mention of masks or face coverings, but do say you should cover your nose with your sleeve or a tissue rather than using your hand when you sneeze.
That said, if people feel better about wearing masks when running errands, it doesn’t do any harm.
And why not do it while looking hella fresh too?
