If you’re a fan of interiors accounts, you’ll know what it’s like to lust after an item but not be able to afford it.
Particularly when it comes to more exclusive or artisanal pieces of furniture, prices can often go up to the thousands.
That’s exactly what happened to 29-year-old Calsey Banks, who fell in love with a dining table and bench set she’d seen online, but just couldn’t justify the price.
The table she’d wanted was £2,000, but instead of simply realising the dream wasn’t to be, she set about making one herself.
Calsey, a PA from Birmingham, shares her home renovation journey on her own Instagram, and documented the making of the table on there, along with her partner Micky.
She told money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk: ‘We came up with the idea because the tables we wanted to buy were just way out of our budget.
‘We thought by making our own it would cost us just a fraction of the price, and we would have something nobody else would have.
‘What we used to make the table and bench was timber wood, wooden dowels, PVA glue and the table legs – it’s as simple as that really. We looked on YouTube for tips and also asked family members for advice.’
The table legs were gifted to Calsey by a company called from The Hairpin Leg co, and the timber was lying around from a previous garden project. So, they didn’t have to fork out a penny.
If you wanted to recreate a similar look, hairpin table legs retail from around £20 for four to £100 for four, but you could also repurpose an old table’s legs for free.
Calsey then began to work out exactly what she would need to do to make her very own table.
‘Firstly, we decided on how big we wanted the table, then cut down each timber to size,’ she explains.
‘We then stuck each timber wood together using wooden dowels and PVA glue just to make it that extra secure.
‘We waited for the glue to dry for a few hours and then once that was done added the legs. We then used a planer tool to level all the table so it was flush and to give it that rustic look.
‘We then sanded down the timber to make sure it was all smooth. Once we were happy with the final look we added some clear varnish to give it that shine effect and protect the table from wear and tear.’
Calsey concluded: ‘We are so happy with the finished product – it’s just perfect for us and our home. We are so proud to be able to say we built our own dining table. We get so many compliments about it and have even inspired others to make their own!’
