Fiona Gall is a DIY queen.
After getting all the applause for turning her ‘council house bleak’ kitchen into one that’s ‘farmhouse chic’ for £218, the mum-of-one from Broxburn, Scotland, has nailed it again by transforming her son’s bedroom into a mini city of London, complete with a bus bunk bed and a view of the city’s skyline.
Fiona says that by upcycling and hunting out bargain buys, she managed to save over £700 on the room’s makeover.
Fiona said: ‘We waited a long time to have him after IVF and making him smile is what life is all about.
‘Freddie ran straight into his bus bed and lay down smiling from ear to ear. He was so excited.
‘He’s been sleeping better since he changed from his cot bed to his bus bed.
‘The feedback from friends and family has all been positive.
‘They loved all the finishing touches and can see how much love has went into making it for our son. The kids have all loved having play dates and playing in his new room too. The fancy dress rail is a big hit too.’
The project took lots of hard work from Fiona over the course of a month.
The civil servant spent hours hunting out the best deals, including finding the bus bed for just £130 and using crown Christmas tree decorations bought for 57p each to give the room a royal touch.
Fiona upcycled some of Freddie’s existing furniture to match the room’s new theme and stuck a vinyl print of Tower Bridge on the wall.
She even made her own pelmet for Freddie’s window using some cardboard boxes, a sheet of fabric and some ribbon for just £7.60.
The mum estimates she spent £330 in total on the project and says she would have had to spend £900 had she bought everything full price.
She said: ‘Obviously we’re miles away from London but Freddie loves buses and my husband loves union jack’s so when we saw the bed a London theme seemed like the perfect theme to go for.
‘We wanted a proper boy’s room that was fit for a Prince after having a gender neutral nursery.
‘The bed should have cost £400 but I was able to track one down online for a fraction of the price.
‘The room is a mix of bargain furniture I’ve bought and items I’ve made myself.
‘I made the bunting using card and ribbon and assembled the furniture with the help of my sister.
‘The flat pack furniture was either upcycled or from eBay and Ikea.
‘The hardest part was the vinyl sticker. I was lucky enough to have help with lots of it from my sister.
‘You would think that would be one of the easiest things but one false move and you’ve stuck it together or ripped it.
‘It came in lots of separate parts, so I had to use a spirit level while trying to stop it sticking together and centre it.
‘The other bits I really enjoyed doing. Obviously seeing our son’s reaction is what made it worthwhile.’
