TV shows and movies might make it look like labour happens pretty instantly after the woman’s waters break, but in real life, childbirth can be a long, long affair.
And those on the sidelines might end up falling asleep before the little one has emerged (we’re looking at you, dads).
One mum has revealed a pretty nifty solution that ensured her partner didn’t nod off for a cheeky snooze while she did all the hard stuff.
Among her labour essentials, Samantha Mravik-Miller, from Wisconsin, packed a Nerf gun – a toy weapon that fires foam bullets – in her hospital bag
The mum-of-two revealed she struggled to wake husband Chad up the first time she gave birth five years ago.
Writing on Facebook, she said Chad could sleep ‘through an atomic bomb’ and kept nodding off after her son was born.
So naturally, Samantha was packing heat in case she needed to rouse him at any point.
When she left the house for a planned C-section, Samantha grabbed the toy gun on the way out.
She then uploaded a picture on Facebook, saying: ‘Mom hack level 1,0000. Worried about the nights in the hospital with your newborn and dad sleeping?
‘Well then don’t forget one of these in your hospital bag.’
Expectant mums, you might want to open up the Argos catalogue for your own makeshift alarm.
The post went viral, amassing more than 17,000 likes and 8,000 comments.
Samantha also revealed how she first had the idea of using a Nerf gun for this purpose.
After the birth of their first son, Samantha lost her voice for 12 hours due to being on oxygen.
Husband Chad, who is ‘the soundest sleeper in the world’, would sometimes have naps that she would struggle to wake him up from.
At the time, she resorted to throwing water bottles, but her aim was sometimes off (she had just given birth, to be fair).
Samantha then decided to up the stakes for their current baby.
She wrote: ‘I thought to myself if there’s ever a point the baby’s crying and I can’t wake him up, I’m going to have way better aim with a Nerf gun than I’m going to have with a flimsy water bottle.’
But don’t worry, she didn’t actually end up shooting at Chad, as he stepped up and did his bit.
Mums commented on the post praising Samantha for her idea and admitting that they would be trying the trick.
One woman wrote: ‘definitely saving this idea for when we have kiddos,’ while another said: ‘I should’ve done this! I had to throw whatever I could at my boyfriend and one right before a nurse walked in.’
Because being subtle just isn’t an option when you’re a sleep-deprived new mum.
