Pop on the kettle and grab a bag of chamomile, as new research suggests that drinking herbal teas genuinely can help you get better sleep.
So yes, you can feel smug about ditching the caffeine after lunch and swapping to a sleepy tea.
Analysis of ten clinical trials involving 550 participants around the world found that herbal teas such as chamomile, ginger, and peppermint brews all helped to improve sleep quality.
Other proclaimed benefits of herbal teas also received some backing – spearmint tea was found to have a benefit for osteoarthritis, lemon balm tea reduced oxidative stress, rosehip tea led to less extreme period cramps, and chamomile improved glycaemic control.
Researchers led by leading medical herbalist Dr Chris Etheridge looked at the results ten ‘gold standard’ studies from the UK, China, Japan and Canada which examined the chemical properties of herbal tea infusions.
Natural compounds such as alkaloids, carotenoids and polyacetylenes are common in many of the most popular herbal tea flavours and these are linked to improved sleep quality and glycaemic control.
Dr Etheridge said: ‘We know that herbal tea infusions contain important plant bioactives which can have diverse biological effects in the body.
‘There is also emerging evidence for anti-ageing effects based on cell studies. Taken together, these studies show that the traditional reputation that herbal tea infusions have for supporting health and wellbeing is well deserved’
This comes after research linked drinking green tea to a longer and healthier life.
In short, we think it’s probably time for a cuppa.
