It’s just a matter of days now until we’ll be tucking into turkey dinners, unwrapping presents and enjoying the festivities of Christmas Day.
Yup, 25 December is honing into view once again, with people across the country preparing to down tools and enjoy a well-earned rest.
And the holiday season can begin in earnest once it’s Christmas Eve next week – with people rushing to buy last minute gifts, head home and watch some festive TV ahead of the big day.
We all know that’s celebrated on 24 December and Christmas Day on the 25th – but what days of the week are they on this year?
Here’s what you need to know…
What day is Christmas Eve and Christmas Day on this year?
This year Christmas Eve falls on a Tuesday and Christmas Day falls on a Wednesday.
That means that New Year’s Day 2020 will also be on a Wednesday, since it’s exactly one week after Christmas Day – while you can make plans for your New Year’s Eve celebrations on a Tuesday night.
Next year will see Christmas Day fall on a Friday as it’s a leap year – meaning Boxing Day will be on a Saturday and meaning you’ll get an extra post-Christmas bank holiday on 28 December.
Is Christmas Day a bank holiday or a public holiday?
Christmas Day is actually a public holiday – which is defined as ‘a day when almost everyone in a particular country does not have to go to work or school’ – and when the vast majority of shops and businesses will be shut.
By contrast Boxing Day is a bank holiday, which is ‘an official holiday when banks and most businesses are closed for a day’.
Christmas Eve however is neither of these things, and is simply a normal working day which happens to be the day before Christmas.
That means the majority of shops and a lot of businesses will be open – although many of them will be closing early.
