When you go online to watch porn while enjoying a masturbation session this Christmas, don’t be surprised if a clip of turkey suddenly pops onto your screen.
This isn’t encouragement for you to try beastiality (please don’t) but part of an initiative to highlight erectile dysfunction.
Head to Pornhub and you’ll find a brand new section of videos featuring various turkeys getting ‘forked’ – yes, really.
In one video, titled ‘hot legs and juicy breasts’, you can watch on as someone carves the bird in slow-mo, while the fat drips from the turkey skin.
There’s also a close-up of a steamy scene where a fowl sensually gets sliced with a knife – so the videos will probably not appeal to vegetarians or vegans (unless they have a secret meat fetish).
The project was launched by online doctor service Zava, following the results of a new study which found that one in 10 men (9%) who experience erectile dysfunction say that porn is to blame.
What’s more, the research revealed that cases of erectile dysfunction are 76% higher in men who watch porn, compared to those who don’t.
The research specifically highlights that watching porn had a negative impact because the men surveyed said they now needed to fantasise to maintain an erection, and 17% claimed it had given them an ‘unrealistic view’ of sex.
On average, participants watch 99 minutes worth of porn every week. However, December gets a slight boost, as 15% claim they will likely watch more clips.
It’s worth bearing in mind that the study was quite small, with 1,000 participants, 35% of which have suffered from erectile dysfunction at some point in their lives.
In other words, watching porn doesn’t necessarily mean that your penis will go soft.
On the contrary, to many men (and women) porn sites can be helpful as it allows them to explore their sexuality, as well as assists them in achieving climax.
There are various reasons why erectile dysfunction occurs, which are unrelated to porn-watching habits.
According to the NHS, this could be a sign of an underlying health issue and/or due to emotional or psychological problems.
If you’re experiencing erectile dysfunction or are worried about how much time you spend watching porn, speak to your local GP or other medical professional.
‘ED is an issue for men of all ages, affecting more than a third at some point in their lives,’ said Dr Deo, GP at Zava.
‘While some causes are known, such as the effect of diet and smoking, our own research has found that many men also believe pornography is responsible for their concerns in the bedrooms.
‘We’re encouraging men to take a break from porn this December, as part of a bigger initiative to start a conversation about ED.
‘Many men find the condition distressing or embarrassing and often don’t seek help. Our hope is that by bringing the topic to the forefront, more men will feel comfortable speaking to a doctor about any concerns they may have.’
While the conversation might feel awkward, doctors are there to help and – if required – will be able to refer you to a counsellor or sex therapist, as well as do a medical check to make sure there’s not something more sinister going on.
Look after your penis this Christmas.
