Pepsi has fused the ‘crisp taste of a Pepsi cola’ with roasted Arabica coffee flavour in its new drink Pepsi Café.
The hybrid beverage certainly doesn’t skimp on the caffeine levels found in cola or coffee. The beastly beverage contains double the caffeine.
Pepsi Café will be available in Original and Vanilla flavours, with the latter being a sweeter, creamier version.
It’s being launched in April next year but the bad news is that it will only be available in the United States.
Pepsi certainly is fans of pushing boundaries in the realm of taste. In 2017, the brand released a spicy ginger-flavoured Pepsi Max. Plus we can’t forget how they ruled the 90s with the eerily transparent Crystal Pepsi.
This certainly isn’t the first time cola and coffee have been combined into one heart-stopping product.
Perhaps you’ll remember 2006 when Coca Cola rolled out Coca-Cola BlāK, a supremely edgy coffee-flavoured Coke. It will not surprise anyone that the product was discontinued in 2008.
Pepsi even introduced Pepsi Kona a decade earlier, a coffee-flavoured soda that was sold (unsuccessfully) only in the city of Philadelphia. Niche.
The fact that a new iteration of this hybrid will return in 2020 does tell us that there must be some kind of evolving market for it. Or perhaps the brand is simply scrambling for ideas given soda sales are at an all-time low.
Earlier this year, there was Twitter chatter about people from Thailand and China – and Birmingham – being fans of ‘milk coke’.
The fusion beverage is made by mixing cola with milk (sometimes condensed milk) to create a unique taste. We even tried it.
Ah well, each to their own.
