Have you finished your Christmas shopping? If not, you have just one week to go.

It’s probably best not to panic buy, or you might end up buying your family and friends something they simply don’t want.

We’ve given you plenty of advice on what to buy for every person in your life but this is more of a guide on what not to buy.

We asked people about the worst presents they’ve ever received (for Christmas and other occasions) and they did not disappoint.

A tiny orange sofa

‘When I was 17, my boyfriend gave me a birthday present in front of all our friends. I opened it, really excited. It was a teeny, tiny orange sofa with little purple cushions. I looked at him and he just looked nervous and said: “It seemed like the sort of thing you would like.”‘

An edible thong

‘One year I spent Christmas with my boyfriend’s family. I was about 16, I think, and his mum had made me a hamper of cute things like pyjamas and bath stuff.

It was very lovely, but my boyfriend’s stepdad had added in one of those edible sweetie thongs.

‘He thought it was hilarious and was making jokes about it, but I just felt hugely uncomfortable. I just ate it in front of them to avoid questions about how it got used. Tasted like shit.’

A reused gift card

‘I once bought a friend a Zara gift card for her birthday, as I knew it was her favourite shop.

‘When it came around to my birthday a month later, she decided to regift me the same Zara gift card. Except it turns out she’d already spent it.’

Spot cream

‘Like most teenagers, I was going through puberty throughout secondary school but unfortunately, I was spottier than the average teen.

‘In my year group, we all participated (or were forced to) in Secret Santa. On the last day before the Christmas holidays, we all got to open our Secret Santa presents which were anonymously gifted by our classmates.

‘I was so excited to open it but to my disappointment, my present was spot cream to help my acne.

‘The worst thing was is that I actually used the product in hopes to clear my skin, but it only caused more spots. Tragic.’

Earplugs and a mystery gift

‘My ex gave me a gift box containing some plastic earplugs for my 18th birthday.

‘He explained there was something else to follow and it was a surprise…. but nothing ever materialised. Bizarre.’

Vodka that brought back bad memories

‘I was given a vodka gift set by my mother, even though she witnessed the aftermath of me drinking vodka at the ripe age of 18 and knows I haven’t been able to drink it since.’

A big box of sex toys

‘I’d just started dating my boyfriend and we had some mutual friends who were also together.

‘They made a big deal out of giving us a couple Christmas gift, which was weird enough, but we opened it and it was just a box of sex toys.

‘I don’t think we even used them because I was a bit uncomfortable that our friends had picked them out and imagined us using them.’

What not to wear

‘A couple of years ago, I asked for a rash vest for lane swimming in our cold local pool and boyfriend got me a burkini.

‘An ex once got me one of those nanna slippers you put both feet in. He also got me the book What Not to Wear.’

Two sewing kits

‘I got two sewing kits from two sets of grandparents when I turned 18. It was like they were saying “you’re an adult now. Sew, woman!”‘
