So, obviously we all know that Father Christmas is real, and that tonight he’s busy pulling an all-nighter for the good boys and girls around the world.

NORAD has launched its Santa tracking website for another year, meaning you and your family can track Santa live as he races to deliver another perfect Christmas.

But how can you find out where Santa is right now?

Here’s what you need to know…

Where is Santa right now?

Tonight, Christmas Eve, Santa will be visiting approximately 5,556 homes per second and consuming 150 billion calories in milk and mince pies, as researched by The Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair and the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR).

Because he’s so busy, where he is depends on what time you’re reading this – he can’t wait around one destination too long.

What route does Santa fly?

Father Christmas’ journey always begins in the South Pacific, with his first stop to the Republic of Kiribati, a collection of 32 islands in the Pacific Ocean.

He then moves west, delivering presents to those down under in New Zealand and Australia, followed by Japan.

Santa then carries on his journey through Asia, Africa and Western Europe.

He’ll finish up his shift with Canada, the United States, Mexico and South America.

The history behind NORAD’s role at Christmas

NORAD has been delighting children (and adults) for years.

It all started with a Christmas Eve shift back in 1955 when Colonel Harry Shoup picked up the phone at the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) in Colorado Springs.

On the phone was a young child who had somehow phoned the classified line after finding a newspaper advert about ‘Santa’s Toyland’ from the US department store Sears.

They had the number of CONAD, NORAD’s predecessor, printed by mistake.

Colonel Shoup went on to receive multiple calls that night from other children, all asking for the whereabouts of the jolly man himself.

He and his good-natured team informed the children calling throughout the night of Santa’s exact location, thus creating what we now call the NORAD Santa Tracker.
