No, doing Veganuary won’t turn you into a woman

If you’re planning on doing Veganuary this month – or are already eating plant-based foods to diversify your diet – you’ll likely see quite a few articles and comments about health.

On one hand there will be extra warning to make sure you get all your nutrients; be that through supplements or making sure you get plenty of protein from food.

On the other hand you should see a fair few positive stories from people who claim that going vegan has kick-started their health and wellbeing.

You can’t believe everything you read online and there’s always a risk claims are made up or inflated to sell you products.

One particular health claim that you definitely cannot trust, however, is the one doing the rounds on Red Pill forums and social media accounts currents: That vegan burgers are equivalent to hormone therapy that will ‘turn you into a woman’.

According to the tweet (of which there are a number of similar posts on the likes of Reddit and 4chan) ‘A standard hormone replacement therapy shot to become transgender is 4mg’.

It’s New Year’s Eve, and we really don’t feel the need to debunk the clear lie that HRT does not make a person ‘become transgender’.

The claim about these specific vegan burgers appears to have come from veterinary doctor James Stangle in an issue of Tri-State Livestock News.

In the piece, he says: ‘An Impossible Whopper has 18 million times as much estrogen as a regular Whopper. Just six glasses of soy milk per day has enough estrogen to grow boobs on a male. That’s the equivalent of eating four impossible whoppers per day. You would have to eat 880 pounds of beef from an implanted steer to equal the amount of estrogen in one birth control pill.’

There is no evidence to suggest this, and it’s a debate that’s been raging for many years (with the term Soy Boy being used in many memes and conversations – referring to men who have become feminised through eating soy, which some sectors of the internet believe includes high levels of estrogen).

On KnowYourMeme the term Soy Boy ‘is based on the presence of phytoestrogens contained within soybeans, which have led some to conclude that soy products feminize men who consume them.’

Although phytoestrogens (particularly isoflavones when it comes to soy) are similar to estrogen in your body, they are not the same. They can disrupt your estrogen production, but not in the same way that estrogen injections, patches, and tablets would.

Phytoestrogens are much weaker than those produced by the body or created for hormone replacement therapy, and can’t bind to your estrogen receptors as easily.

So unless you’re ingesting almost inhuman quantities of soy – like the man who grew benign breast tissue after drinking three litres of soy milk every single day for years – you won’t see any adverse effects.

Just like how you can get potassium poisoning from stuffing 400 bananas into your body in one sitting, even foods that are great for your body can be harmful in massive quantities.

In fact, Harvard School of Public Health have extolled the virtues of soy, saying that it’s a complete protein full of nutrients.

They say: ‘Results of recent population studies suggest that soy has either a beneficial or neutral effect on various health conditions.’

Best to listen to them rather than strange people online who are so frightened of femininity they’d rather get keto breath on a raw meat diet or refuse to wipe their bums to avoid it.
