Attention plant-based pals and those partial to a creamy dip with their spiced chip: Nando’s is launching the vegan PERinaise of dreams.
From 1 January 2020, vegan PERinaise – that’s their slightly spiced creamy sauce, but now vegan – will be available at Nando’s restaurants and in Tesco supermarkets, just in time for Veganuary.
Now, before anyone goes on about Nando’s being a chicken restaurant and asking why any vegetarian, let alone any vegan, would go there, it’s worth knowing that Nando’s has done veggie-friendly stuff for quite some time.
When they swapped out their veggie burger for Supergreen Burger and a Sweet Potato & Butternut Burger, they may have broken some of our hearts but they also created two main options for vegans – all you have to do the make both vegan is ask for either option without mayo… or, as of 1 January, with vegan PERinaise instead.
Then you’ve got your pick of plenty of vegan starters and sides, including the garlic bread and that classic houmous with peri-peri drizzle.
Just be careful to mention that you’re vegan or vegetarian when you order, so staff can make sure no chicken-y products infiltrate your plate.
So yes, vegetarians and vegans can and do go to Nando’s. But for a long time those of us who don’t consume egg products were unable to enjoy the taste of PERinaise – an essential addition to chips.
As of the new year, this will no longer be the case. You’ll still be able to get your regular PERinaise if you’re resistant to change, but anyone vegan will be able to ask for for the vegan version, which you can spot with a green accent on the packaging.
A pot will cost 60p in restaurants, with takeaway options available, and you can grab 265g bottles of sauce from Tesco for £1.90.
Oh, and if you’re wondering how one would make mayonnaise without any egg, here’s the full list of ingredients. Ready?
The vegan PERinaise contains: water, rapeseed oil, vinegar, sugar, cornflour, salt, apple vinegar, spices (red chilli pepper, African Bird’s Eye Chilli, paprika, white pepper, black pepper), potato protein, thickeners (guar gum, xantham gum, propylene glycol aliginate), onion puree, preservative, lemon puree, green chillies, garlic puree, antioxidants (calcium disodium EDTA, ascorbic acid), rosemary extract.
Sounds tasty.
