Stay-at-home mum Debbie Cottrell, from Radcliffe, Manchester, has always had a knack for making her children’s rooms special.
She had previously given her eight-year-old son Freddie his very own pirate-themed room, complete with a homemade mast.
Freddie had loved that room, but in the last two years he started to ask for something a bit more grownup. So Debbie, 47, gave herself a challenge: She would give her son’s room the football-themed makeover of his dreams in time for Christmas.
She pulled it off, of course, completing the room just two days before Christmas Day.
The project took months to complete and cost £555.13 in total, with Debbie, who’s also mum to Lucy, 24, Tom, 21, and Frankie, three, keen to keep costs down.
The transformation took a lot of work. Debbie repapered the room (with the help of Freddie and his Dad), ordered a mural from eBay and painted the wall to match, and added plenty of football memorabilia as decoration.
The standout element of the room is clearly the bed, which took some craftiness on Debbie’s part.
The mum couldn’t find any goal post beds she liked the look of, so instead found a bed frame designed to create a little house and set about transforming it. After reading a review on Wayfair in which a customer said she didn’t use one bar across the top, Debbie knew she could do the same to turn the frame into a goalpost shape, then ordered the biggest football net she could find on eBay, which she attached with velcro.
Freddie absolutely loves the end result.
‘My son is so appreciative of his room,’ Debbie told Metro.co.uk. ‘He even told his Daddy we are the best gift he could ever have for Christmas, even better than his new Xbox!
‘What a lovely thing for an eight-year-old boy to say. It brought a tear to my eye.
‘He is so worth it and all the hard work makes it all worthwhile when your children appreciate things you do for them.
‘He is so happy with his room and he feels so grown up now.’
