We reported yesterday that Greggs announced an expansion to their vegan range, but were remaining tight-lipped about which products would be dropping.
Since then, new intel has come to us, which suggests that the release is definitely going to be a steak bake, among other items.
While this remains speculation at the moment, the two sources who contacted us both said they work at Greggs, and have it on good authority that this is what’s coming.
One whistleblower, who wishes to be named only as Greg Greggs, said: ‘I’ve worked at Greggs for the last year and a half, and although I’m not really one to share trade secrets, I’m planning on quitting soon and thought I might as well share some information while I have access to it.
‘Vegan steak bakes are definitely happening. I don’t have photos to confirm this, but all employees I’ve spoken to regarding it are aware they’re arriving in the new year, and my manager has shown me stock sheets with ‘vegan steak bake’ written on them, ready for when our deliveries arrive.’
They also claimed that new products were launched on Thursdays in the past, so they predicted that the bake would be coming on either 2 January or 9 January.
The second insider who contacted us, and identified themselves as ‘your secret Greggs man’, said: ‘So releasing 27th December is…
‘New Glazed ring donut which is now vegan. And our warm winter vegetable soup which is now also vegan.’
This was echoed by Greg Greggs who told us: ‘I’m near certain that we have a vegan soup on the way, due soon. We are trained to use different coloured serving equipment (such as tongs, ladles, etc.) for different dietary preferences: black/red equipment for meat pasties; green equipment for vegetarian pasties; and yellow equipment for vegan pasties.
‘We recently received a yellow ladle amongst our delivery, which we believe is in preparation for a vegan-friendly soup.’
Asking Greggs for their input on the issue, they said at this point they’d prefer not to make a comment, which is fair given their big plans are potentially being usurped by their own staff.
It’s a good thing for us customers, though, as it means we can get truly acquainted with the idea of an animal-free steak bake.
If it’s anywhere near as good as the vegan sausage roll, there will likely be queues too, and knowledge is power when you want to beat the crowds.
