Jemma Bassam was delighted when her family got her a vintage Jaguar to take her to her wedding ceremony as a surprise.

But the car ended up almost making her missing her own wedding when it broke down on the way to the ceremony.

Luckily for Jenna and her husband-to-be Craig, the local police were on hand to help out.

The car had ‘started chugging’ and conked out by the roadside of the A421 in Bedfordshire on Saturday leaving Jenna, 27, and her dad stranded.

But a passing police patrol car noticed the car and pulled over.

To make sure she got there on time, Jenna’s mum got her car and took her to the venue while the police stayed with the car to wait for it to be repaired.

Jenna made it just 20 minutes late, much to the relief of a nervous Craig.

With the car now back in action, it turned up to take the newlyweds to their reception but the police came along to help too.

Jenna and Craig came out of the church and were greeted by the sight of the police officers, the vintage car and a roadside recovery vehicle.

They gave them a blue-light escort to their wedding reception at Cranfield, Beds, just in case the car struggled again.

Mrs Bassam said: ‘We saw the blue flashing lights and the officers said they were waiting to rescue us and escort us to the reception

‘We have five children and they absolutely loved it. They all got to go in the police car.

‘It was fantastic and absolutely magical.’

Mr Bassam said the unplanned addition made sure the day would be ‘unforgettable’.

Bedfordshire Police wrote on their Facebook page: ‘When a wedding car broke down in a live lane on the A421 on Saturday, our wonderful Specials were on hand to assist.

‘The bride went on to the ceremony in another vehicle and our officers waited to follow the repaired car and The AA to the church.

‘Then both emergency services provided the new Mr & Mrs with an escort to their reception.

‘Congratulations to the happy couple.’
