Christmas is a time for family, for tradition and for food. Emphasis on that last one.
It’s a time when brands work themselves into an absolute frenzy to see who can move the most product over the festive season. Sometimes, this means they set out to entice shoppers by releasing utterly wild products.
Here’s a round-up of the unholiest festive supermarket offerings this year.
Christmas dinner pizza, ASDA, £3.50
ASDA did something a little different, releasing a pizza topped with the essentials – tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese – only to fling on turkey, pigs in blankets, sage and onion stuffing balls, and a sachet of cranberry sauce to drizzle.
In case you didn’t get the festive idea, the pizza is also tree-shaped. Pop one of these up in the living room.
Two metre-long pig in blanket, Aldi, £4.99
When Aldi released a foot-long pig in blanket last year, they knew they hadn’t gone far enough. In 2019, the supermarket chain created a 6 ft 5 (two metre) long version.
Prawn roses, Tesco, £5
Remember the rose? It is a flower. You’d be forgiven for forgetting this considering the prawn rose has now replaced that for us all.
Simply give your divine one a bouquet of these spicy chilli and sesame beauties.
Candy cane gin liqueur, Aldi, £8.99
Aldi, hun, there is a limit to what gin can do. First there was the creamy gin – an unholy blend of double cream, gin and gingerbread flavour – and now there’s this candy cane gin liqueur. Customers have referred to as ‘ghastly’ and evocative of cough syrup.
Vegan Christmas tinner, £2
This one’s not exactly purchasable in supermarkets, but it’s worth a mention. Within a humble can, tech retailer GAME have managed to pack vegan gravy, mushroom wellington, pigs in aubergine blankets, tofu and stuffing, as well as your go-to winter veggies including squash, sprouts, and parsnips.
Mini Yorkshire puddings, Aldi, £2.99
Need a Christmas dinner in one (big) bite? One that you can ferry around in one hand? Meet Aldi’s mini Yorkshire puds. These are each topped with a pork, sage and onion stuffing ball, and of course, a full pig in blanket.
Christmas avocado, Waitrose, £4.50
This Christmas, spoil the special Gen Yer in your life with this sweet, sweet piece of millennial kryptonite. This avocado-shaped treat is made up of caramel white chocolate and rich dark chocolate.
Elf ice cream, ASDA, £1.68
Ok, this tub of colourful ice cream is fairly cute. The flavours are white fairy floss, green raspberry (coz that’s real) and candy cane sugar sprinkles. Kids go wild for the stuff.
Orange chocolate cheese, Morrisons, £10
It’s an unlikely combo of dark chocolate, orange and crumbly cheese, but it just might work as a dessert cheese.
